When answering a debate question of whether he believes Americans can afford the higher prices that come with his proposed tariffs of up to 20 percent on imported goods, former President Donald Trump responded that China and other foreign countries would have higher prices, not Americans during the presidential debate Tuesday.
He then claimed the Biden-Harris administration was responsible for high inflation, though economists say presidents can’t do very much to control inflation.
“I had no inflation, virtually no inflation. [Biden-Harris] had the highest inflation perhaps in the history of our country because I’ve never seen a worse period of time,” Trump said. “People can’t go out and buy cereal or bacon or eggs or anything else. The people of our country are absolutely dying with what [Biden and Harris have] done. They’ve destroyed the economy.”
Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump met for their first and possibly only debate on Sept. 10, hosted by ABC in Philadelphia. Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee this summer after Biden gave a troubling debate performance in June, increasing calls for him to drop out of the race.
According to the latest PBS News/NPR/Marist poll, more than two-thirds of Americans say they will watch all or most of the debate. While many voters have already made up their minds, 14 percent of Americans say the debate will have a great impact on which candidate they choose.
